New York
Liberia TRC Project in Staten Island
Mirroring the TRC’s work in Liberia, The Advocates for Human Rights has a formal Memorandum of Understanding with the TRC to conduct statement taking from Liberians living throughout the United States. This work could not have been undertaken without the more than $9 million in in-kind contributions and pro bono hours donated over two years to the TRC Diaspora Project by individuals and partner law firms and institutions around the United States and in the United Kingdom.

Working in collaboration with The Advocates, its New York partners assist those Liberians in the New York area who voluntarily come forward to tell their stories to the TRC. The Advocates is also working with a number of groups, including Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, the Staten Island Liberian Community Association (SILCA), African Refuge, and Professors Jack Saul and Peter Rosenblum of Columbia University, to carry out this work. Individuals who give statements have access to counselors, immigration lawyers, and social service referrals. Information from interviews will be included in the TRC’s historical record and will form the basis for The Advocates' report and recommendations to the TRC.
