Buduburam Update
10/31/2007 4:35 PM

As part of the Liberian TRC Diaspora Project, the TRC and The Advocates have identified the Budumburam Refugee Camp near Accra, Ghana as an important site for collecting information on the experiences of Liberians now living in the Diaspora. There currently are 38,000 Liberian refugees residing in this camp, which has been in existence for 17 years. The Advocates for Human Rights and the Liberian TRC are working with the Liberian Refugee Welfare Council and have trained residents of the camp as statement takers. To assist the statement-takers' efforts in the settlement, statement taking teams of staff and volunteers from The Advocates for Human Rights have traveled to Ghana to conduct statement taking. The TRC conducted outreach in the camp in early April and May of this year. During the week- long pilot statement taking project in May, a team of The Advocates' staff and volunteers, along with three TRC representatives, gathered more than 160 statements. A 14 person team of volunteers and staff led by The Advocates' Deputy Director Jennifer Prestholdt took statements September 22 - 29, while a second 12 person team of volunteers and staff led by The Advocates' Executive Director Robin Phillips took statements October 1 - 7. The response was overwhelming as the volunteers took more than 600 statements in two weeks.
